(2012) was a bold attempt to expand the franchise beyond its original star, Matt Damon. Directed by Tony Gilroy (who wrote the previous three films), it shifts the focus to Aaron Cross (Jeremy Renner), an operative from a different program called Outcome . The Critical Consensus

Jeremy Renner was widely praised for his "magnetic" and physical performance as Aaron Cross. The film’s action sequences, particularly the climactic motorcycle chase in Manila, were noted for their high production value.

The film received , currently holding a 56% on Rotten Tomatoes . While many critics praised the performances and the expansion of the lore, others felt it struggled to justify its existence without Jason Bourne himself.

Some viewers found the film "too dialogue-driven" and filled with technical jargon compared to the lean, propulsive style of the original trilogy. A common complaint was that the story felt like it was "running in place" alongside the events of The Bourne Ultimatum rather than moving forward.
