The transmission cut out. Kiteretsu and Korosuke looked at each other in shock. Miyoko was their best friend; if she was calling for help tomorrow, they had to prevent it from happening today.

Kiteretsu sat hunched over the Kiteretsu Daihyakka , the ancient book of inventions left by his ancestor. He had just finished assembling a device called the —a small, brass-rimmed gadget designed to hear sounds from exactly twenty-four hours into the future.

The floorboards gave way. Miyoko didn't fall far, but her foot was wedged between two heavy beams, and the door had jammed shut from the vibration.

Kiteretsu dialed the settings to exactly one day ahead. At first, there was only static, but then a frantic voice came through. It was Miyoko. "Help! Someone help! It’s trapped in the old warehouse near the river!"

Korosuke nodded, though his stomach gave a loud growl. "That’s great, Kiteretsu-nari... but can the future tell us when the croquettes are ready?"

Suddenly, Kiteretsu realized the "trap." The warehouse was scheduled for demolition the next morning. If the kitten went inside and fell through the rotting floorboards, it would be trapped when the bulldozers arrived.

Butagorira scoffed. "Your gadgets are always causing trouble, Kiteretsu! There’s nothing at that old warehouse but dust and rats."
